What happened 2015 in AIESEC in Austria?

2015 already ended, but every ending is the start of something new. Now, reflecting of what it has been, we know 2015 has been a good year with many improvements and milestones.

Here is a short overview:

Some Numbers and Facts

In 2015 were able to provide a total amount of 192 international exchanges, giving all those exchange participants a chance to develop themselves while doing purposeful work, abroad or in Austria. Our incoming volunteer projects even had an increase of over 35% in participation compared to 2014, while our outgoing corporate internship program, Global Talent, could improve by impressive 40% compared to the previous year. But these are not only numbers; these are life-changing experiences that we, as a youth organization, succeeded in delivering, in only one year, to people from our generation.

Introduction of Global Entrepreneur

This year we were proudly introducing a new program – Global Entrepreneur. program enables students to find an internship in an entrepreneurial environment abroad and to gather tons of experience. Furthermore, through this program, we enable start-ups from Austria to Austria to have in their teams highly motivated and outstanding students from abroad.

Amazing events

This year we had events both for students and companies. We organized focused workshops for students (e.g. workshop “How to write a successful CV”), or business networking events like “Career Days” or “Consulting Challenge”. Besides that, we had also events that promote cultural exchange like “Global Village”, where students from different nationalities, who came in Austria for our volunteering projects, prepared traditional dishes from their respective countries. With those events we did everything we could to foster cross-cultural understanding.

All in all it can be said that 2015 has been a very successful year for AIESEC in Austria, but we don’t want to settle at successful – we want to strive for excellence, so let’s see what 2016 will bring for us!

AIESEC Resolutions 2016

As a new year approaches us, both individuals and companies reflect on their plans for the future. AIESEC takes a step further and, as an organisation, sets clear milestones every five years in order to come closer to the achievement of our organisation’s mission, peace and fulfilment of humankind’s potential. The end of this year meant the completion of our 2015 vision, but it also marked the establishment of the new milestone, AIESEC 2020.

The reasons for initiating AIESEC 2020 is quite simple. The key to achieving long-term goals is by having a clear strategic direction. The new plan can be seen as a refreshment of AIESEC’s earnestness: Giving leadership development to youth with an accurate plan.

The three AIESEC 2020 statements are self-explanatory and underline the meaning of the organisation as a global youth movement.

  1. Shaping what we do around what the world needs
  2. Growing disruptively
  3. Being accessible to everyone, everywhere

The first statement indicates that it is essential for the organisation to be fast in responding to the world’s trends. In 2016, AIESEC wants to align to the global necessities with the help of Youth Speak, a youth insight survey. This global movement focuses on understanding what hopes and challenges the youth is focusing on and what issues they are ready to act upon. By that, young people have the opportunity to provide decision makers with the opinion of how they envision the world. Their insight will make an impact on how to adapt to the world and work upon the first goal.

The second statement expresses the wish to expand more and more on the existing market, and by that, also to create new markets. Furthermore, it also means to promote innovative ideas and to elaborate on the point that standards lead to satisfaction. To achieve that, it is important to ask the question, “How can we engage Millennials to take actions?”. This helps understand how to contribute to the goal of engaging more and more young people and by that, it enables us to truly be a Global Youth Movement – Broadening our perspectives on numerous fields leads to being able to make an impact and influence more of the global situation.

The third statement hints to a limitless AIESEC world, without boundaries towards physical or virtual engagement with the organisation. As a Global Youth Movement, it is essential to make sure that we can reach as many young people as possible. This is why in 2016, we want to enable exchange of ideas, innovation and collaboration and be relevant to any young person in a flexible, attractive and engaging approach. To ensure that the 2020 vision will truly have an impact on AIESEC and on the world, concrete goals will be finalized by the end of summer 2016.
The new year in AIESEC means to bring us closer to engaging and developing every young person in the world. The map to achieving the goals is already there. What follows is taking this path and constantly optimizing it on the way. Let us look forward to a challenging journey!

Importance of continuous personal development

Many young people who are willing to do an internship abroad have a natural desire to learn. Sometimes it is not obligatory for them to do an internship, however they really want to do it because of many great benefits and also to develop themselves. Besides various advantages of an internship, this personal desire for continuous self development is also important for the working life of young people. But why is being eager to develop oneself so essential for a company?

People who seek for continuous personal development are a big factor of human capital for a company. They can be an inspiration for other employees and their aspirations and dreams can be cost saving, time saving and much more for a company.

Motivated people can fight obstacles much easier than people who aren’t. They are willing to learn from their mistakes, take the responsibility and the possibility to gain new experience. This is a characteristic which is very important for every employee of a company. In realizing your weaknesses, you can also fix them quicker.

Furthermore, self-confidence is another characteristic that usually comes with continuous personal development. Being confident is a significant attribute for employees which helps them to work independently and is also helpful for decision-making. Being self-confident increases the performance of employees and is supportive for achieving goals. Moreover, self-confident people can motivate others with their positive attitude and they are able to create an improved working climate. Further on, they are more relaxed when meeting new people and are not dependent on judgments of others.

Due to this various characteristics that come along with continuous personal development it is essential to have motivated people in your company. Young people are eager to learn continuously and are because of that and many other reasons a huge enrichment for your company.

Leader or follower – take responsibility over your legacy

Nowadays we live in a world where things seem to have gone a bit wrong: we’re talking poverty, hunger and political and economical instability. All these issues (and many other) are gaining ground in our societies, yet some of our leaders seem to have lost interest in their people.

But that is where AIESEC steps in: we believe that the youth united can build the pillars for a new society. And because we know that believing is not enough, we also chose to act.african-american-869673_960_720

The concept of leadership has changed throughout the years so much. If one thinks about it, a leader was always someone who represented the people and ‘lead’ them to a better living. It was someone who did their best for the prosperity of the community. Because they believed that, if the community thrives as a whole, each member of that community will benefit from it and flourish as well. Such simple thinking back then. Well, how about now? Our species is supposed to have evolved, are leaders nowadays (not only on a large scale)? People dedicate themselves to their leaders, but where do they lead the people to?

busy-880800_960_720

Anyhow, it’s not only about leadership. Day by day it seems more difficult to develop oneself because of the environment we live in – the world constantly gets more confusing. What is my place in the world? Such situations make one question him or herself, not to mention their skills. This proves there is always more to it. That is why AIESEC offers a unique way to develop, both professionally and personally. Our programs aim for a different type of approach when it comes to gaining experience in the work field.

Nevertheless, the journey AIESEC proposes also a personal, inner journey – finding the work field most suitable for you, or finding a new field to work with. We believe that this kind of focus proves most effective for a work experience: understanding your own self (that is sometimes eclipsed by society) in order to develop and improve professionally. Only when being utterly self-aware will one be able to use their talent and grow.

As said before, this world needs new leaders. But people should not wait on a knight in shining armour; they should realise that they don’t need titles to be leaders. What AIESEC does is help them decide what kind of leaders they are. As Gandhi once said: “The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world’s problem.” Of course taking action can be hard and difficult. But nothing can be done without action, so take responsibility over your legacy: go for AIESEC. Decide the type of leader you are and lead.

ON INTERNSHIPS – THE STRUGGLE IS REAL

There comes that time in a student’s life when he or she gets closer to the ‘real world’ – more responsibilities, more decisions, more burden. One of those burdens is linked to one’s vocation. In this respect deciding on an internship becomes a crucial step at the beginning of the career. Does the field of work fit? Will the time I spend help me in the future? – These struggles appear without doubts at some point. But during that particular time, AIESEC wants to help the youth spread its wings.

In order to support the future generations, AIESEC steps in with an exclusive project called Global Talent. From UK to China or Mexico, this internship program has been making the bond between companies and students from all over the world for a long time now and is always ready for more.

Such an experience assures not only professional development, but also, more important, personal development. While out of their comfort zone, people tend to realize more about the world and about themselves and what they really want in life.

Throughout our life the learning never stops. What is important, though, is that we learn the right things. Here are some of the interns’ thoughts about their experience throughout the program:

“Considering my professional development it was a very important step in my career. I got valuable insights into working in a professional environment, working independently and into customer relationships. And it made me think about what I want to do in my future life.”

Bianca Bauer

Mexico – Bosch

Project Mobile Migration – IT department

“I definitely enhanced my Spanish, I learned that there is a big difference in the working culture, although it was the same company. I learned how project management is done in Mexico and how the meeting culture is different.”

“It was one of my best experiences of my life. Every young people should really make this experience and work abroad. You can learn so much, which can help you for your whole lifetime in your private as well as professional life.”

Birgit Hoheneder Dublin/Ireland

Hertz European Service Center – Call Center Agent

“As for me it was really difficult to find a suitable internship for my studies I decided to go with AIESEC as they supported and helped me from the first moment on. My expectations as whole were completely met, speaking of the whole experience.”office-594132_960_720

Rus Diana Elena

Xi´an – China, Days Hotel & Suites Xinxing – GRO (Guest relations officer)
“I was always interested in different cultures, to meet new people, to live in different countries and to see different places. These are the main reasons why I decided to take this internship.

I am completely satisfied with all the time spent in China. I enjoyed every day.”

“I would take part again and again and again at any other internship. No matter where it is.”

Taking an internship could be an important first step in anyone`s career. For that simple reason, taking an internship abroad makes this first important step even more significant. Shannon L. Alder once said “The only real conflict you will ever have in your life wont be with others, but with yourself.” First, you need to figure yourself out, and then everything will become easier. That is why AIESEC puts forward the program Global Talent.

Take the chance – get a grip on your compass and turn this first step into a solid foundation of your future.
